So not even an hour later, I decided to bang out the next scene. Uh, this is the scene where Alex and his wife have a dialog. I tried to keep the talking as uncomplicated as I could, although I don't think heartfeltness is my strong suit. And really, I have like no idea how to write this so if anybody has any suggestions to make this better, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD POST. I did kinda feel like a scene like this would be necessary (but not overly long), hence why I didn't just eschew in entirely. I just don't want this to be like the animal cracker scene in Armageddon. Anyway, "enjoy".
INT – ITALIAN RESTAURANT - NIGHT TIME
Alex and his wife Wendy are sitting in a dimly lit Italian restaurant. (with audible noise) She reading the menu while he is just fiddling with his silverwear until a waiter comes by.
WAITER
Are we ready to order?
WENDY
I don’t know, are we?
Alex is still staring off into the middle distance playing with his fork.
WENDY
(ignoring Alex) I’ll have the tiella with the mussels and a Roman salad on the side. Oh, and a refill on my chardonnay.
WAITER
Certainly, and for-
ALEX
(without inflection) More bread.
WAITER
Is that all…. ?
WENDY
He’ll decide soon enough. We’ll let you know. (hands him the menu)
WAITER
Very well. Yours should take about 20 minutes.
WENDY
Thank you. (Waiter leaves) (turns to Alex) So, are you still alright?
ALEX
Right as rain, Wendy. Things haven't changed. You know how I like to bottle my excitement over these things.
WENDY
Do you want to eat somewhere else?
ALEX
I don’t know.
(long beat)
WENDY
Should I just go?
ALEX
(defeated) Jesus, Wendy…… You know….. I…..
WENDY
I’m sorry. I knows it’s stressful. I know it’s dangerous. I know-
ALEX
I don’t want to talk about it. I just want to eat in peace and pretend this whole thing isn’t existing for just one damn evening.
WENDY
Then can you at least look like you want to be here?
ALEX
Sorry?
WENDY
You know, I’m scared too. But I want, in a few months, for us to start working on buying a home, and getting out of the city and (chokes, eyes well up) to settling in the country and-
ALEX
Well you can still do that if I don’t come back.
WENDY
(begins to cry) I don’t want to. I want to do it with you. You’ve always-
ALEX
What makes it so positive to you I’ll make it out?
WENDY
(wipes eyes) Because, I have faith. I have faith that you’ll help fix whatever it is you need to fix. And then…… we can start living like we always wanted. In peace. (sniff) I just…. hope that you want that as much as I do.
Alex looks at her like “yes, I do, but your weeping isn’t doing me any favors”.
WENDY
I know it’s an awful strain on the both of us. It always has been. Buy you’ll make it through, I know you will.
Alex’s face begins to crumple, but he doesn’t cry.
ALEX
I know, I know (doesn’t believe himself).
WENDY
You’ll do fine. Now, I see our waiter. Are you ready to order?
CUT TO
INT. BENNET APARTMENT - LATER THAT NIGHT
“Love is Like An Itching in My Heart” plays on the soundtrack. Alex is standing at the counter when Wendy, dancing, grabs him and they swing into the living room where they both strip off all their clothes whilst dancing.
CUT TO
Alex and Wendy seen dancing from outside, their lighted room a glowing contrast to the darkened city around them.
